I just wanted to write a short note about Corsica and two of its residents. I have been friends of Joyce and Edd Star for many years and have enjoyed their company. I live in Langley Township British Columbia, Canada. Corsica holds fond memories, hot summer nights watching a baseball game with my friend Darwin star, then running for cover when the siren went off indicating a storm in the area. I hope to visit your town again and two of it's finest citizens. God Bless all of you and the values that are part of your community.     Tony de Jong

I am still wondering about the cosica city wide rummage?  -annoynomous (sic)

(Sorry you missed the rummage sales that were held in March in conjunction with Appreciation Day. It was posted on the front page bulletin board at corsicasd.com. We were unable to contact you directly since you included no contact information in your submissions. Watch the bulletin board on the front page for that info in the future.)

Correction to my February 27 post ... my grandfather Rev. Samuel Brondsema was a pastor in Colton, not Corsica, SD.  Although, from reading his diaries (1913 - 1975) I notice he had many entries of visits to and with people from Corsica.  Daniel VanMeurs, Grand Rapids, MI, danvm@ti-gr.com

Does Corsica have a city wide rummage? I know it is early in the season yet but I am new to the area and was just wondering if anyone knows if they do and if so approx. when it is held? Thanks!

Date: 27 Feb 2010

My grandfather Samuel (Sikke) Brondsema was a pastor in Corsica from 1917 for a few years. He had a cousin, also a Samuel (Sikke) Brondsema, born 6 Nov 1887 Middelstum, Groningen, died Apr 1979, who lived in Corsica.  I would like to make contact with this family from Corsica to help fill in some Brondsema family history.  Daniel VanMeurs, Grand Rapids, MI, danvm@ti-gr.com    -Daniel VanMeurs

Greetings to all my friends in Corsica and environs! What fun to read all these entries from many people I knew/know through the years past. I especially enjoyed the entry concerning the name Corsica. When I went to the USD I did a place name study of the places in Douglas County. How about that? It was also fun to hear comments about The Up-To-Date Shop, our family business. But my real reason for getting connected is that I'm trying to write my memoirs for my family and need a copy of the articles I wrote for the GLOBE the summer of 1960. I Think we called them "Traveling in Europe" by Ervie or Winerva Van Roekel. I had done the same in 1959 on my trip to Alaska, but I have copies of those. Is it possible to get copies of my 1960 articles? My email address is geoerv@juno.com. My address: 17122 - 25th Ave. NE, Lake Forest Park, WA 98155. We are a suburb just north of Seattle.  Thanks!

I am wondering if the gentleman that signed his name Gene Noteboom ever lived in Madison, SD? I used to live in Madison and remember a family by that last name. Sir if you are that person would you mind giving me a call at the number listed below?

Thanks Mr. Vanden Hoek, for your eventual reply! My Corsican colleagues will be glad to hear about the origin of our hometown in SD. Corsican natives take great pride in their culture and heritage and will be thrilled to know the hard work of their ancestors played an important role in the town's establishment. Cheers! -Lindsey Reimnitz

Date: 23 Dec 2009

On 15 October 2009, Lindsey Reimnitz inquired about the name of Corsica and how it came about.

The following excerpt is taken from a publication of the Corsica Globe during the towns 75 Anniversary. "Reportedly the name was chosen at an informal meeting of a handful of local people with a few railroad executives. It is told that at that meeting the first name submitted was "Little Napoleon", after the crew foreman, but after some discussion that was decided to be too cumbersome. Other names were brought up which won favor with a few in the group but were then dropped. At last someone suggested that since the railroad workmen had played such an important role in the town's beginning, why not name the town after their home island of Corsica. The name "Corsica" was agreed upon, and thus this small town in South Dakota received its name from an island in the Mediterranean."

I forget to give my email-address for contacts [See 11 Aug 2009 post below] about the Mennink/Menning family, original from Drenhe in the Netherlands. I have researched this family back to 1697. Jan Niemeijer, Veendam, the Netherlands, email: janniemeijer@zonnet.nl

I grew up in Corsica but am currently living in the south of France. Many people here are interested in our hometown (because the name corresponds to the island of Corsica located in the Mediterranean Sea, not far off the coast of France). I am wondering, why was the town named Corsica?     -Lindsey Reimnitz  [no email address was submitted]

My father, Peter DeVries, died Feb. 25 from multiple myeloma cancer. To the end of his life, he had fond memories of the little town where he grew up. (For those of you who are wondering, his parents were Art & Rena DeVries. Art's name is still on the silo on the old DeVries farm.) I am very grateful we were able to make one last trip to Corsica with Dad last summer...

I am looking for the descendants of Sikke Brondsema, so that I can continue my family history.  Sikke was called up for WWI, and the card states he lived in Corsica, SD.  I note that an earlier post was from some Brondsemas, so the family must still be there.  Could someone from the family please email me at asrelouw@bigpond.net.au so that I can continue the research.  It would be greatly appreciated.

Hello, Looking for information about Roy D. Beukelman He was KIA during WWII - 23 march 1944. His plane collided with another one in the vicinity of Vollenhove - The Netherlands .... Looking for Cora Beukelman and relatives. At the moment I'm searching for names related to my town. Of those B-24’s, some came down alive with their parachutes ( 4 ? ), the others were killed, and at the time buried in the Cemetery of Vollenhove, including Beukelman, in Grave No. 603. His body was, after the war, re-interned in the U. S. A.

My grandfather, Sam Teske, moved to the 320 acre farm, 1/2 mile south and 1/2 mile east of Corsica around 1912 or 1913. The people who lived on that farm previously were Mr. and Mrs. Percy Carter. Anyone who might have more specific information would do me a favor by supplying the same, especially where such land/farm transfers might be recorded. Sam Teske and his wife, Karolina, retired around 1939 or 1940 and moved to Delmont, where they lived until they died in 1941. My email: herber.jr1554@sbcglobal.net

Hi, I just discovered this web site as I was looking for the e-mail address of the Corsica Globe. We are having a Krull reunion in Corsica July 31, 2005 and was looking for newspaper articles to be included in a book about the Krulls. My grandfathers name was Karl Krull and his sons were Henry, Carl, George and Enno, my father. They had a daughter named Marie who married John Mayer. I am Shirley Krull Francis and am looking for any and all stories about Krulls. My grandfather and grandmother came from Germany via Iowa. My folks Enno and Verna lived on a farm 1 1/4 miles from Corsica for quite a few years and moved to 5 miles east of Dimock. Please contact me if you have any stories to tell. clshfrancis@aol.com

Hello Corsicans.  I was born in Parkston and moved away when i was little but spent each summer with my grandmother Frances Beukelman throughout the 80's.  My brothers and I have fond memories of chasing foul balls during men's baseball games, doing our first backflips off the diving board at the pool, and playing scared while vicious thunderstorms roared outside.  I married a woman named smith and told her about a town where the name Beukelman was as common as any she would see. She was shocked when we went to visit and she saw Beukelman posted right there on main street. Cool stuff. Thanks for the smile.  Great little place.

I accidentally landed on the Corsica, SD cite while looking up history of Corsica, France. It took me back to my small town environment in NC (pop.800) when I was growing up. When going through the high school roosters over the years, I see a majority of Dutch names, especially in the 1940's through the 1970's. Some Anglo names have popped up more lately. I would assume that the original settlers in the late nineteenth century spoke The Dutch language as did many German emigrants in SD. Could you tell me when, in your town, English basically replaced Dutch. Great web cite. C. D. Lee (I live in SC)

My grandparents, Walter and Helena Van Heest, lived in Corsica till their death in their 70's. I remember the City Cafe (where they served pop with the glasses upside down on top of the bottles), Up to Date Shoppe, and Reformed Church as well as the pool with the windmill from our visits. I was there in 1966 to celebrate my grandparents' 50th anniversary and now my dad, Roland Van Heest, and mom are celebrating their 50th this summer. My dad receives the Corsica Globe and visits occasionally--I think he would move back if Mom would move with him.

My father's family, John and Gertrude Vogel and 9 children, lived in the Corsica/Douglas county area during the early part of the 1900's( my father was born in 1909) . Until the 1970's the much-extended family had relatively small remaining farmland holdings in Douglas County and somewhere around that time the old family house was moved to a museum/park in the area.

Each summer the family has a fairly well attended reunion in Grand Rapids, MI., where several of the family members now live. This year I am considering arranging a brief side-trip by air to South Dakota so that the remaining old-timers can show the area to the new generation who, by some folks standards, are becoming something resembling old-timers ourselves.

I will share and appreciate any thoughts/guidance/or information anyone could give me regarding:

1. Recollections of the Vogels 2. Location and hours of the house. 3. Things to do/sights to see/places to stay in the relatively immediate area. 4. Anything else of interest to someone with a story like mine.

I live in Dallas (central time zone) and can be reached by e-mail at gv@alum.calberkeley.org or by daytime phone at 214/350-6422.

Hallo dear friends of Corsica,

I have been looking for Corsica, Sd for a while. It was the town where Seine Harms Boertien first started a new life after imigrating from the Netherlands, this together with his wife Niesje Masselink, and their children from both their first marriages. Also where Harmen Zomer and Hermanna Kaptein, started a new life. He was a cousin of Seine Harms Boertien. Hope to visit Corsica in September, together with my wife on occasion of our 25th marriage anniversary. I sure hope to meet some descendents of the Star, Scholten, Zomer families. I am doing a research on the Dutch families who immigrated to the USA in the 1880's and later on. It was nice visiting your site, next time for real! If you would like to contact me, just send an e-mail!!! Greetings from the Netherlands

Hi to the People of Corsica.
In 1997 my wife and I visited Corsica to peruse the old issues of the Harrison/Corsica Globe, doing research on the history of Dutch-Indian relations. Mary Neugebauer was extremely nice and helpful. I would be interested in any stories (written or taped), clippings, papers, photographs, etc. on the history of relations between the Dutch-Americans of Douglas County and their Native neighbors. The research will result in a publication and an exhibition on the Iowa and Dakota Dutch to be shown in the U.S. and in Holland. Any individual contribution will be explicitly acknowledged.
