From the SD Highway Patrol report: At 0605 hours, Trooper Holman responded to a pedestrian versus train crash on Main Street in Waubay. A Burlington Northern train was traveling westbound through Waubay when the conductor noticed something lying on the tracks. He stated the item appeared to be a garbage bag. The train’s whistle was blown to alert traffic of the train approaching the upcoming intersection. When they blew the whistle, the conductor and the engineer of the train saw a person trying to get up off of the tracks. The engineer immediately put the train in emergency mode, applying the brakes. The person could not get off the tracks in time and was run over by the train. It appeared that the pedestrian had been sleeping on the railroad tracks. At this time, the identity of the victim is unknown. It is also unknown whether or not alcohol was a factor in the crash. The Day County Sheriff’s Office, Waubay Fire Department, and Christenson Ambulance Service assisted at the scene. Click Here to view the complete Highway Patrol report (updated weekly) |
