Area Obituaries
Dennis grew up in Hull, Iowa and Rock Valley, Iowa and graduated from Western Christian High School. He attended Dordt College and then Calvin School of Seminary, earning a Master of Theology degree. He met Doris Maas in the food line at Dordt College. Dennis and Doris married on June 3, 1970, and started a family. Dennis became a Pastor and ministered in various Christian Reformed churches, starting in Forest Grove, Michigan moving on to Leighton, Iowa, Chandler, Minnesota, New Holland, South Dakota, and then returning to Forest Grove. He finished his pastoral career at Stalwart Presbyterian Church in Stalwart, Michigan.
Dennis was an avid reader, especially of the Holy Bible. He enjoyed taking his sons fishing when they were younger. He also liked to go pheasant hunting when he lived in South Dakota. He enjoyed handing out two-dollar bills, gold and silver dollar coins, and candy to children to see their smiles.
Dennis is survived by his wife, Doris Boogerd; sons, Timothy (Annette) Boogerd of Naperville, IL and Nathan (Sarah) Boogerd of Norton Shores, MI; daughter, Sarah (Sam) Scholten of St. Augustine, FL; grandchildren, Madelyn Boogerd, Ava Boogerd, Katherine Boogerd, Joshua (Lauren) Boogerd, Ryan (Hallie Snodgrass) Boogerd, Edward Boogerd, Xander Boogerd, Samuel Boogerd, and Elliot Scholten; siblings, James (Sheryl) Boogerd of Rock Valley, IA, Marilyn Caswell of Inwood, IA, Robert (Lori) Boogerd of Rock Valley, William Boogerd of Rock Valley, Betty (Doug) Elgersma of Sanborn, IA, and Rachel (John) Bergeland of Sioux Falls, SD; in-laws, Joyce (Bob) Fritz of Allendale, MI, Harriet (Doug) Kallemeyn of Holland, MN, Wilbur (Joyce) Maas of Sioux Center, IA, Lois (Larry) VanderPloeg of Austin, MN, Marlin (Karen) Maas of Corsica, SD, Marsha (Dick) Bordewyk of Corsica, SD, and Gary (Beth) Maas of Harrison, SD.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, James and Marie Boogerd; sister, Linda Boogerd; brothers-in-law, George Caswell and Bob Twiest; mother and father-in-law, Joe and Mildred Maas.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at the First United Presbyterian Church, 555 Bingham Ave., Sault Ste. Marie. Visitation will be from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM with the funeral service starting at 11:00 AM. A luncheon will follow the funeral service.
Graveside burial will be at the Stalwart Cemetery, in Goetzville, Michigan, at 4:30 PM.
