Kenneth Niewenhuis

Kenneth William Niewenhuis, 96, went to his heavenly home Thursday, January 2, 2025 at Good Samaritan Center – Corsica.  Funeral service will Tuesday, January 7 at 10:30 am at Christian Reformed Church in Corsica.  Visitation will be Monday, January 6 from 4:30 to 6:30 pm, with a 6:30 pm prayer service, at Christian Reformed Church in Corsica.

Ken was born January 7, 1928 to James and Bertha (Roelofs) Niewenhuis in Willmar, MN.  He moved with his family to Corsica, SD where he attended Christian School and Country school through the 8th grade.  He was united in marriage to Juella Vander Ley on December 30, 1952 at Christian Reformed Church in New Holland.  He was a lifelong farmer who also served his country as a Corporal in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.  Ken was a member of the Christian Reformed Church where he was an Elder and Deacon, the VFW, and served on the Corsica Christian, New Holland Christian and Dakota Christian School Boards.  He loved going on vacations with his family each summer and their yearly camping trips. He also enjoyed going to Florida for 20 years where he worked in the fruit orchards.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Juella of Corsica; 5 children:  Linda (Jim) Vande Kerk of Rock Valley, IA; Donna (Mark) Ness of Mitchell, SD; Dennis (Jackie) Niewenhuis of Corsica; Norma DeWaard of Stickney, SD and Duane (Rhonda) Niewenhuis of Harrisburg, SD; 16 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; a brother, Bob (Faith) Niewenhuis of Jenison, MI; 3 sisters-in-law, Lila (Jim) of Hudsonville, MI; Ramona (Harlan) DeLange of Rapid City, SD; and Judy (Harlan) VanGenderen of Platte, SD; and a brother-in-law, Larry (Bonnie) Vander Ley of New Holland, SD.

He was preceded in death by his parents; in-laws, Bert and Johanna Vander Ley; 5 siblings:  Bert and Edith DeJong, Wallace and Mindy Niewenhuis, John and Lavonne Maas, Ken’s twin brother, Calvin and Ethel Niewenhuis, and Dale and Fran Niewenhuis; son-in-law, Keith DeWaard; grandson, Vince Ries; and a brother-in-law, Fred Vander Ley.

Memorials may be directed to Dakota Christian School or Crossroad Prison Ministry.
